Work and Bread
The exhibit on the second floor of the museum is about:
- where the people of Graubünden found and find work.
- how they earned and earn their daily bread.
The individual rooms deal with the following topics:
- agriculture
- trade and industry
- transport
- tourism
- emigration and immigration
Up until the 19th century the majority of the population mostly made their living in mountain farming. A further livelihood was provided in some of the valleys by transport over the passes, in others by mining. With the exception of the town of Chur, trade was usually combined with agriculture. Emigration had long since been an alternative.
In the second half of the 19th century the service sector transit traffic was displaced by the service sector tourism. With few exceptions, larger industrial establishments have never been able to gain a foothold in Graubünden. In tourist areas emigration was replaced by immigration. What has remained is the enormous difference between highly developed service centers and peripheral areas, above all the typically agricultural valleys.
