New Permanent Archaeological Exhibition at the Rätische Museum
Finds and Findings
In its reorganisation of the permanent exhibition the Rätische Museum has taken the last step: On December 14, 2011 the basement is re-opening.
In the new permanent exhibition each floor is devoted to one topic. As of 2007 the topic on the first floor is «Power and Politics». On the second floor the topic «Work and Bread» was added in 2008. «Belief and Knowledge» followed on the third floor in 2009. By redesigning archaeology in the basement, the permanent exhibition originating in the eighties has now been completely replaced. The ground floor remains reserved for temporary exhibitions, the attic for museum education.
The archaeological exhibition in the basement follows well-known epochs. It starts with the Stone Age and the oldest traces of settlements in Graubünden of Chur-Marsöl dating back to about 11’000 to 9’500 BC. Starting with the Early Bronze Age there is an intensive increase in new settlements in the Alpine region with a corresponding proliferation of finds. The following Iron Age gets its name from iron, which increasingly replaces bronze. Around 15 BC the Romans conquer present-day Graubünden, which also leads to significant cultural changes. The last chapter in the basement is finally the Early Middle Ages (400-800 AD).
The exhibition was devised in close co-operation with the Archaeological Department. Special attention was granted the new and most recent assemblage of finds. As was the case with the previous floors, the agency gasser, derungs is responsible for an attractive design bringing together content and form.
